NEWS:
IPTV gathers
momentum in
new markets
|
According
to the latest research from Informa Telecoms & Media,
the IPTV market continues to expand with global IPTV
subscriptions reaching 29.7 million at the end of 2009,
up from 19.4 million a year earlier. In particular,
IPTV has started to win significant share in several
emerging markets and has made inroads into some developed
mid-sized ones, albeit at a slow pace. The number of
quarterly net new subscriptions, or net additions, for
broadband-based TV services from telecoms operators
and ISPs reached a record high of 3.2 million in the
last three months of last year. But just four countries
accounted for nearly two-thirds of all IPTV subscriptions:
France, the US, China and South Korea. IPTV still
has a long way to go, said Rob Gallagher, principal
analyst at Informa Telecoms & Media. The technology
has only 5% of the multichannel-TV market and less than
2% penetration of the worlds households, despite
services being available in over 50 countries. In many
markets, services have simply struggled to make progress
against cable, satellite and terrestrial TV competition.
But the potential for delivering broadband-based services
to the TV should not be underestimated. Despite the
low number of success stories for conventional IPTV,
the underlying technology is increasingly being embraced
by cable, satellite and terrestrial TV providers as
well as Internet firms, media groups and consumer electronics
manufacturers. IPTV has gained significant share
in markets where one or more competing forms of multichannel
TV are absent or weak, such as Iceland (81.0%), Qatar
(80.0%), Cyprus (67.0%), Slovenia (35.0%), Croatia (25.0%),
Estonia (25.0%), Montenegro (23.5%) and Greece (23.5%).
Services also began to take the majority of net additions
in some more competitive mid-sized markets in 2009,
including Switzerland, Belgium, Singapore and Portugal.

CONNECTED
WORLD AT IBC2010
|
The
last five years have seen a revolution in the development
and delivery of broadcast content. From passive receivers
of bundles of pre-scheduled content in their living rooms,
viewers are being transformed into selectors and consumers
from a vast menu of global content - able to take whatever
they want, however, whenever and wherever they want it.
Made possible by the digitalisation of broadcasting, this
revolution has been driven by waves of technological advance,
each of which have spawned their own industries - from
Mobile TV to broadband and IPTV and even Digital Signage.
The main driving force that is now set to revolutionise
the way in which broadcast content is consumed is the
proliferation of web-enabled consumer electronic devices
- from smartphones to connected set-top boxes, hybrid
TVs and gaming devices. Together these technologies continue
to transform the viewer from passive targets to increasingly
individual and interactive focal points within an increasingly
connected world. But where is this all taking us? How
will further developments in such connected technologies
and consumer devices shape our lives in the future? This
year, for the first time, at IBC2010, these emerging technologies
are to be brought together within the Connected World
of Hall 9.
The
Connected World at IBC2010
The Connected World at IBC2010 will incorporate the
highly successful IPTV, Mobile and Digital Signage Zones
that have been established over the last few years and
showcase some of the latest developments in connected
consumer electronic devices. Together these technologies
are set to change the face of broadcasting and revolutionise
many of the established business models on which the
industry has been built. The Connected World at IBC2010
provides a unique opportunity for application developers,
content providers and technology companies to showcase
their capabilities at the centre of the broadcast industrys
leading international conference and exhibition.
The IBC2010
Mobile Zone
Recent advances in mobile technologies and services
have opened the door to the delivery of a vast range
of broadcast content via an increasing array of mobile
devices. This mobile revolution, resulting from the
convergence of IT, telecoms and broadcast technologies,
is creating vast opportunities for application developers,
content providers and technology companies alike. Now
in its sixth year, the IBC Mobile Zone has been created
to bring together all the latest advances in technology
and applications to demonstrate the possibilities and
opportunities arising from this mobile revolution. In
addition to showcasing the latest developments in mobile
TV and 3G services, the Mobile Zone will feature the
latest innovations in mobile devices and explore their
impact on the creation, management and delivery of broadcast
content.
The IBC2010 IPTV Zone
The demand for IPTV has shown explosive growth over
the last 12 months. Recent research by MRG, Inc predicts
that the number of IPTV subscribers worldwide will continue
to grow at 31% per year to reach 83 million by 2013,
creating a $38 billion marketplace for services alone.
Now in its fourth year, the IBC2010 IPTV Zone has been
expanded in 2010 to form a hub for a new area and visitor
attraction showcasing advances in connected consumer
devices, the key technologies emerging in IPTV and demonstrating
the enormous potential that exists in this sector.
The IBC2010
Digital Signage Zone
The market for Digital Signage is set to grow rapidly
over the next few years. A recent report by iSuppli
predicts that global shipments of digital retail signs
are set to rise to 2.5 million units by 2013. This figure
represents a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 26.8%
since 2008. Now in its third year, the IBC2010 Digital
Signage Zone will bring together many of the organisations
and technologies that are emerging as major forces and
demonstrate the enormous potential that exists in this
sector.
To take your share of this
fast expanding market, join the Connected World in Hall
9 at IBC2010. For further information please contact:

ENABLING
IPTV OPERATORS TO
LEAD IN MULTI-SERVICE DELIVERY
|
Appear
TV, provider of next-generation head-ends for broadcast
and IP television, is helping European telcos and broadband
& IPTV service providers to move ahead of the competition
in their video, voice and data services offerings. Thomas
Lind, technical director at Appear TV, said: IP
and telco TV service providers have traditionally only
been able to offer a limited range of video, voice and
data services. Our FTTH last-mile solutions create new
business modules and marketing strategies. The introduction
of DVB-T, DVB-C or analogue RF services, for example,
can change the business case for IPTV by enabling service
providers to dramatically increase both the number of
channels and services they offer. Our FTTH last-mile solutions
make it possible for service providers using all optical
networks to deliver all flavours of digital and analogue
video alongside advanced voice and high speed data services.
The result of this is that, in many parts of Europe, subscribers
are turning to IPTV service providers and telcos not just
for voice and broadband data services, but also to receive
free DVB-T terrestrial channels, an analogue channel package
and premium TV services like sports, movies and PPV.

SECURING
CONTENT FOR WIST
IPTV SERVICE
|
Verimatrix
has announced that WIST, one of the longest-established
telcos in Poland, has deployed the Verimatrix Video Content
Authority System (VCAS) for IPTV to secure its lineup
of services for the Rzeszow region. Working with partner
VECTOR, VCAS for IPTV secures content for 80 MPEG-2/MPEG-4
channels, video-on-demand and network personal video recorder
services. WIST is delivering IPTV services to subscribers
via its ADSL2+ network and is using BeeSMART middleware,
customised by VECTOR, and the 1910 series of set-top boxes
from Motorola. WIST selected VCAS for IPTV based on Verimatrixs
successful track record and strong endorsement from VECTOR.
Verimatrix
is well-regarded in this region and the telecommunications
industry, said Andrzej Kochanowicz, vice president
of the Board of Telecommunication Cooperative WIST. We
had some unique network requirements and VCAS for IPTV
provided the flexibility of a software-based content protection
solution that we were looking for. It enabled us to gain
access to premium content to help maintain customer loyalty
and attract new subscribers.
VCAS
for IPTV leverages the two-way IP infrastructure in WISTs
network by providing a more sophisticated level of content
security than traditional smart card-based systems. Cryptographic
and e-commerce technologies proven in Internet banking
enable VCAS to secure content and enhance revenue streams,
while successfully combating digital piracy and unauthorized
access wherever it may occur within the distribution chain.
IPTV continues to be an attractive service for telcos
to gain a competitive edge, said Steve Oetegenn,
chief sales and marketing officer. Operators now
have a broad choice in proven solutions that best match
their network goals. We give full credit to the strength
of our partnership ecosystem that enables us to deploy
a cost-effective content security solution.
